  1. Last week, the Minister of Diversity, Inclusion and Persons with Disabilities, Kamal Khera, concluded a productive working session at the United Nations Permanent Forum on People of African Descent in Geneva. She was joined by a group of Canadians from civil society, who showcased Canada’s commitment to building a more equitable society.
  2. Today, Minister of Labour Seamus O’Regan Jr. announced the appointment of an Industrial Inquiry Commission on the underlying issues in longshoring labour disputes at Canada’s West Coast ports. The Commission will be chaired by Vincent Ready and will include Amanda Rogers as a Member of the Commission. The Commission will soon begin meeting with stakeholders and reviewing consultation submissions from relevant parties. The Commission will present its findings and recommendations in a report to the Minister in Spring 2025.

Electric vehicles (EVs) will be getting a boost from the hundreds of public EV charging ports that will be installed throughout the Capital Regional District (CRD) after a combined investment of more than $8.7 million from the federal and provincial governments, the CRD, and the City of Victoria.

Today, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) announced the Commission’s decision that the existing environmental assessment (EA) for the Darlington New Nuclear Project (DNNP) is applicable to the reactor technology selected by Ontario Power Generation (OPG), the General Electric Hitachi BWRX300 reactor.

  23. People and communities across B.C. will benefit from enhanced protection against the impacts of climate change and severe weather after a combined investment of more than $26 million from the federal, provincial, and municipal governments.
  24. The federal government is investing more than $10.4 million through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP) to support five disaster mitigation projects across British Columbia. The Government of British Columbia is investing more than $8.6 million in these projects and the municipalities are contributing a combined $6.9 million and are responsible for any additional costs.
  25. Official language minority communities (OLMCs) enrich our linguistic heritage and play a vital role in strengthening Canada's workforce and economy. The Government of Canada continues to promote the economic vitality and well-being of individuals in these communities by ensuring that they have the supports they need to find employment and succeed in their careers.

The new Employment Assistance Services (EAS) stream under the Enabling Fund for Official Language Minority Communities (EF-OLMC) is one of the most important initiatives in the Government of Canada's Action Plan for Official Languages 2023–2028: Protection – Promotion – Collaboration to ensure that people living in OLMCs are able to find, obtain and maintain a job. Up to 43,000 Canadians will have access to these services annually, and these supports will be delivered by organizations that understand the unique needs of individuals who are part of OLMCs. Organizations have until June 20, 2024 to apply for funding.
  27. A recreational facility in Powell River will receive green retrofits after an investment of more than $1.6 million from the federal government.
